Organising an event can be quite nerve-wracking but it helps if you make a plan. Whether you're planning a small event at your school or business or you have bigger plans and would like to get local media coverage, the steps are the same. It's only the time frame and the numbers of people involved that will change.

The 5 Ws - Why? Who? What? Where? When? - may seem obvious, but the answers will help keep your planning on course. Following are some ideas:

Is it to raise money for a local charity or encourage young people to think of new ideas? Think about the purpose of your event and what you would like to achieve.

Who do you want to invite to your event and how many people do you want to attend? Who do you want to work in partnership with, some of the most successful events are those, where a number of different organisations have worked together, sharing the same objectives.

Interactive? Entertaining? Informative? Also consider the costs of running your event and the amount of support you will need in your organisation to make the day successful.

Will you run your event inside or outside and will you, for example, put up posters, distribute leaflets or send an email in order to ensure everyone knows? Do you need to contact local journalists in advance to see if they would be interested in covering your story in the press?

Plan the date of your event and work backwards to assess if you can get everything ready in time.
